June 9 Update
This past week in humanities, students completed the final unit in social studies: social programs and taxation in Canada and the United States. Students completed a unit test on the topic on Thursday. Students also finished filming their commercials and creating advertising posters for their Consumerism and Marketing unit. This week, students will be reviewing topics from earlier in the year and preparing for next week's PATs, with mock exams. The first PAT will be next Monday June 17 (Math Part B).

This week in humanities, students will be completing a unit on "consumerism", for Social Studies. They will be writing a mock PAT-style quiz as well as creating a commercial or advertisement billboard based on one of the marketing schemes learned in class. Students will also finalize their free verse poems, which will be shared with class on Tuesday. On Friday, selected students will share their poems in a school poetry slam. They will also continue working on their myblueprint portfolios for health.

This past week in humanities, students learned about the formatting and planning process of writing a formal business letter. They wrote a mock PAT letter, before writing their official PAT on Thursday May 9th, which consisted of 2 parts: Essay or Narrative and Letter Writing. Students will receive a course grade from either their official PAT or their in-class practice writing (the higher mark of the two will be recorded). Next week, students will begin their poetry unit, leading up to a poetry slam on Friday May 31st. They will also begin a new Social Studies unit on Consumerism.

This week in humanities, students worked on a mock PAT writing assignment for which they are evaluating the importance of planning for the future. The essay is due at the end of this Friday's class. Next week, we will practice writing a short story, based on the same topic, as students will be given the option to write either a narrative (story) or essay for their PAT on May 9th.
Students also continued reading "City of Ember." All work up to Ch. 18 is due at the end of this week. Next week, we will finish the novel and begin the final assignment, which involves formal letter writing.
On Friday, students will be introduced to the online career planning program, "myblueprint" to help plan their future paths in high school, post-secondary, and beyond.

This week, students will continue working on the City of Ember Novel Study. All work up to chapter 14 is due on Wednesday, April 17. All copies of work can be found on D2L brightspace.
Students will also be learning about different economic systems and how they affect qualities of life. We will have a PAT style unit test (multiple choice) for our economics unit on Thursday.

Spring Break
Over the past month, students have been working on their political campaigns, which culminated in a school wide election on Thursday March 21st. Conservatives won the popular vote with the Communists coming in second. Final results, based on number of ridings held, will be released on the first day back at school (April 8th). The party that forms the school's student government will be revealed along with the official opposition.
By the first day back at school, students should be finished all assigned work for the City of Ember up to chapter 10 as well as the pamphlet assignment. All copies of assignments can be found on the class D2L Brightspace shell through the CBE website.

This past week, students worked on their campaign commercials for the upcoming school election. Groups had filmed and most are completing the editing stage. Next week, we will be preparing for the second debate, which will look at issues at the local school level.
Students continued with their novel study on the City of Ember. All work up to and including Ch. 6 was due this week.
Guidance counsellors from Forest Lawn High School gave grade 9 students an information presentation on high school course selection and experiences on Tuesday. They will be returning to sign students up for their exploratory courses next week.
